Becky goes to New Zealand

I was asked in May if I would be available to keynote the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert summit in Auckland, New Zealand this July. At first, we weren’t sure about me going because there was a lot going on that weekend: JT had a baseball tournament and a birthday, and we were supposed to be leaving for a weeklong camping trip with family. But once Jim and I talked it over, he said, “You don’t know if you’ll ever get another chance to do this. You should go.” So I said yes!

It’s pretty amazing to me that I have a job where someone will ask me to fly to New Zealand and speak at a conference… and pay for everything… and pay me a speaker fee on top of it all. This isn’t how I envisioned living my life at 38! 🙂

I flew to NZ on Tuesday, July 10. Because NZ is over the dateline and it’s about 17 hours of travel, I landed Thursday, July 12 at 5:30 AM. I lost Wednesday to the universe! It is also winter in the southern hemisphere, so I had to mentally adjust to that!

After I arrived, I caught my reserved shuttle to the hotel and had early check-in. I was in my room before 7 AM! I worked for about an hour (it was midday Wednesday in the States and I had a ton of emails) and then unpacked before heading out the door to find breakfast. I ate at a little café and then caught an Uber to the bottom of Mount Eden, just outside the city. It is the tallest natural point in Auckland. I walked up the hill (one mile, steady climb) in the sunshine!

It is a volcano that erupted a very long time ago, and you can walk the rim of the crater. It’s gorgeous!

Then I caught another Uber over to St John’s Hill/Cornwall Park. I hiked up that and walked miles around the park. It is a working farm and is owned by a trust so that it does not cost the taxpayers anything. Very cool.

After a quick lunch and a recharge of devices at the hotel (and a half hour nap; I’d been up since 2:30 AM Auckland time), I walked the waterfront and enjoyed the gorgeous city views.

The Auckland Harbor bridge is a scale replica of the Sydney Harbor bridge.

I was all excited to try the Auckland Fish Market… it was smaller than I thought it would be!

I planned to go up the Sky Tower to watch sunset. It is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. It is similar to the Space Needle or the CN Tower or other tall building… but with new scenery.

I met the two ladies who arranged my trip, Rachel and Nikkie, for dinner Thursday evening in the harbor. Then I crashed in bed!

On Friday, we met after breakfast and walked to Microsoft House, just half a mile from the hotel.

We met with Morgan, another educator, and Anne, the Teacher Engagement Manager for Microsoft New Zealand, to go over last minute details for the event.

Then Nikkie had arranged for us to take a ferry to Waiheke Island for lunch!

A shuttle picked us up at the ferry landing on Waiheke and drove us to the top of the island. The view was gorgeous!

Lunch at a winery in New Zealand calls for a tasting flight… and lamb shepherd pie! It was so good!

Friday night we met the Australian educators who had flown in for the summit (five of them) for pizza at a restaurant in the harbor.

And then Saturday… the big event began! Seventy educators attended the morning session. I had the opening keynote and I finally felt ready.

After that, I led two more breakout sessions in the afternoon and then joined everyone for dinner at the Royal Squadron Yacht Club, hosted by the event.

On Sunday, the day flew by. I attended sessions led by the New Zealand educators and Australian guest speakers, and helped the educators with their group challenge. Then I changed into my travel outfit and got ready to fly home!

As we were leaving the summit in our shuttle buses, one educator noticed a rainbow over the Sky Tower. How timely and beautiful!

After I landed in the US, I saw a tweet from one of the other speakers at the event that made me feel awesome. I wasn’t sure if my keynote had been on point… but I got lots of positive feedback at the event, and lots of tweets and blogs and posts afterward. Success!

Toy and Geek Fest

Preston invited us to see the Blackhawk helicopters at the Puyallup Fairgrounds this weekend. Little did we know (when we said yes, of course!) that it was also the annual Washington Toy and Geek Fest. There was so much to do and see!

We started in the military area…

And Haley also conquered the climbing wall.

We grabbed some scones because Fairgrounds.

Then we went in the Hobby Hall and met Optimus Prime (the actual truck from the Transformers movie)…

Flew an X-wing…

Hoverboarded next to the Delorean…

Sat in the Millennium Falcon…

And fought off Siths. It was basically an awesome time!

How is it already July?!

The kids finished up a great week at our church VBS program the week after school got out.

Then we helped Grandma and Grandpa Keene move into their new house… in our neighborhood. Hooray!

We also watched our two-week old friend Everly for a few hours Saturday morning. We all had a lovely time snuggling her!

Finally, we wrapped up June by attending my cousin Jacob’s wedding to his lovely best friend, Jordan.

How did June fly by so quickly?!

ISTE 2018 Chicago

I spent six days away from home last week attending the annual ISTE conference, this year held in Chicago. This is my fifth ISTE conference and it never ceases to amaze. A record-breaking 23,000 people attended this year!

We arrived on Friday night and got settled – late due to weather delays all around the country. On Saturday we went exploring and walked 13 miles around the city.

Lunch at an Italian restaurant in the city

Lake Michigan

Walking the river walks

On Sunday, we took an architecture cruise on the rivers. It was really interesting and the weather was spectacular!

Sunday afternoon we went up Chicago360 and saw beautiful views of the city – as well as tipped out thirty degrees over the sidewalks. It was a fun touristy thing to do!

On Monday I had two speaking engagements – one at a Microsoft VIP Experience session where I talked to school leaders from around the US who had been specifically invited to hear about tools in the classroom, and another called Ignite. I had applied to be selected as an ISTE Ignite speaker and was so honored to be chosen. There are only 12 speakers selected each year and each person gets 5 minutes on stage to speak to 20 slides (they advance automatically every 15 seconds) about a passion or innovation. I spoke on how to make systems change throughout the science of contagiousness as it fits a professional development model. It was really exciting and very well received in front of a packed audience!

Monday night we hosted a team dinner for all of our i2e professional learning consultants (and some of our favorite clients) at Lou Malnati’s, a famous pizza place in Chicago.

The four women who make up our leadership team at i2e – Helen, me, Beth, and Kim. We are a powerhouse combo! 🙂

Followed by our group…

Tuesday we attended an evening event at the Museum of Science and Industry. It was fun to see the Pixar exhibit – even if only briefly – and learn about new tools from other cutting edge educators. We also made it to a party at a Speakeasy – hidden doorways behind bookshelves and all!

Wednesday we had some customer meetings and left the conference in time to walk some of the Magnificent Mile. We shopped and went to a lovely early dinner, street side, before heading to the airport.

Summer begins!

Summer 2018 is finally here! On a gorgeous hot day, with nothing to do, the kids welcomed summer to the neighborhood.

Within minutes, there were five children playing wiffle ball in the field next to my house. Love it.

Also, Haley and JT played tennis with Grandpa Cole at our neighborhood tennis courts. Haley was a little sad that she didn’t have the right size racket of her very own… so a few hours later, Grandpa showed up with one!

Baseball Barbecue

We had such a fun time at the Father’s Day barbecue that JT’s baseball team got together for. His coach lives on the lake and invited all the families after our games on Sunday – and the weather cooperated. It was 85 degrees and gorgeous all day long. So after two great games (in which JT continues to improve getting his bat on the ball; awesome) we headed to the lake. Everyone signed up to bring a side dish. We brought our boat. We pulled a team full of boys and their siblings and friends around the lake for three hours. It was soooo much fun!

Jim’s Birthday Surprise

Every year for his birthday, Jim asks for the same thing: skiing and floating. With his wife. 🙂 And anyone else who wants to come. So this year his birthday fell on a Monday (which he has off, and so can I) and we didn’t have baseball over the weekend. I booked a surprise trip to Lincoln Rock State Park for just the two of us to ski, float, and relax!
But first, his family birthday party…

We left Saturday night, late, after cleaning up from the party and packing for the weekend in just two hours flat. Having a camper makes life soooo easy. We drove to North Bend and spent the night in a Travel America parking lot, which was a fun adventure for us. We woke up and made breakfast right in the parking lot!

Then we continued on to our final destination and arrived before lunch, and our spot was open. We launched the boat and set to work relaxing. 🙂

We had such a nice evening with yummy burgers and corn, and then sat by the campfire for hours.

These gorgeous views were happening right in our field of view. We had a waterfront spot and it was amazing to see.

Monday morning was Jim’s birthday and we enjoyed a lazy breakfast, more time by the campfire, and one last boat ride/ski before we left.

Jim said it was the best birthday gift ever!

Lake Wilderness Tri 2018

I’ve been able to focus more on triathlon training this year since post-surgery recovery, and in January I started getting back into it. Six months of working out consistently totally paid off for my first triathlon of the summer! Jim came along to cheer me on so we got some photos too.

Here I am getting ready to head into the water…

And here I am, 1:45 later! My time from this course last year was 2:02 – so I finished a whole 17 minutes ahead. It was a pretty amazing feeling!

I felt strong during the race, and Jim got me a sensor for my bike for my birthday that really helped me keep my pace and cadence correct. So when I got off the bike and realized I just had to jog a normal 5k run and would finish well before the two hour mark, I was super excited. It turns out, I really enjoy triathlons!

Fort Worden

We were invited to Fort Worden by our friends the Drews for Memorial Day weekend, months ago. They have gone for the past few years with a group of people from local churches and they’ve enjoyed including more friends with young kids over the years, and this year there were two open spots – so the Lees and we went along!

The four days and three nights went by so quickly. The kids enjoyed mountain biking, skateboarding, playing on the beach, hiking in the woods, playing with friends, making s’mores, and more. The adults had fun talking after the kids were in bed 🙂 and enjoying time with our families.

I took tons of pictures! I made a Sway to capture them all.

Lake Pleasant

We spent another overnight in the camper at Lake Pleasant RV Park in Bothell as JT had a tournament in Meadowdale over the weekend. What a lovely spot!

On Sunday, the weather turned rainy (surprise to everyone) and we got soaked with that fine misty rain that never ends here in the PNW. Fortunately, we had our camper! So during the lunch break in between games, we got toasty warm, dried our jackets and shoes, ate hot food and hot chocolate, and thoroughly enjoyed a dry place to hang out. Travis and Grandpa and Grandma Keene hung out with us too!

The kids had fun playing card games in the bed while the adults chatted at the table after lunch.

I wore one of JT’s hats during the game to fight off the rain but Jim was gifted his own hat by the coach for helping with score/stat keeping every game. Jim loves his new hat!
