Radar Lake

We’ve been looking forward to this past weekend since June for three reasons: weekend away, weekend with friends, and skiing Radar Lake. Way back in June, my friend Dani invited us to her birthday weekend. She said, “We’re camping at this place called Radar Lake. We rented it for the weekend. Have you heard of it?” I about fell out of my chair. Radar Lake is an exclusive ski lake – the first man made ski lake in the world, actually. It is about an hour outside Seattle and it is gorgeous. It used to be invitation-only but they allow non-pro skiiers and wakeboarders to rent the cabin and lake for the weekend from time to time.

Then we asked Jim’s parents if they wanted to trade their huge beautiful motorhome for our kids for the weekend (everybody thought they made a good deal) and we were off!

Jim set his new personal best this weekend! 2 at 28 off.
Sunset. Lovely.
Saturday night the hostesses arranged for a catered barbecue dinner for all of the guests – yum. We watched Alabama football and stuffed ourselves before rolling into bed and getting ready for another day of water and fun.
The Hollanders were there, too – yay!

Enjoying the fire

I didn’t set a new personal best but I skiied well and made a few full passes.

I also started learning to boat surf – so fun. The lake is made for water skiing, not boat surfing, so it was a little tough going and I had to try with my opposite foot forward, which felt weird. I had a great time trying and am looking forward to trying again this summer with Jackie and Dani (cough, cough!).

Jim stuck to skiing. Do what you love!
We hung around until dead last because we were enjoying relaxing by the fire by the lake in peace. Here’s our last picture before we headed home. What a great weekend – and there’s talk of a repeat for next year. Awesome!

Summer Saga

Let me tell you a little story about this summer. On July 6, we got home from a lovely camping trip for the long weekend and found that the water supply line into our master bathroom toilet had cracked and leaked water all over the bathroom, through the floor, and into the office below. It also dripped over into the living room and landed on the piano. Nice.

Jim found the problem around 7 PM so we had to wait until the next morning to call our insurance company. We cleaned up the water and waited.

The next day, they assigned us to an adjuster. The day after that, I talked to the adjuster and he had a project manager at ServiceMaster come to our house that afternoon. Within two hours, there was a crew at my house tearing down the ceiling in the office and in the living room, and tearing up the floor in our master bathroom. I really had no idea they would demo that quickly. Then for the entire weekend we had seven large industrial fans and three dehumidifers running 24 hours a day.

Cords running down the halls. Not really that interesting but remember this, the old flooring.

The office turned into a red zone

Moved our office necessities to the upstairs guest room so we could still function.

The adjuster said, “Call a contractor. I’ll send you my estimate and a check.” We thought it would be easy and wrapped up within the month. Ha!

We called four contractors and only heard back from two. Of the two that came out to the house, one took three weeks to get us an estimate and we finally gave up on the other one. Seriously?! By then it was the end of July. So we called a friend of ours who works for RW Anderson Homes and asked for some advice. He referred us to their handyman services, RW Handyman. It turns out, Jim went to college and lived with the general contractor for RW Handyman! He came out the next day. He gave me a verbal estimate before he left the house and a written estimate within one business day. Now that’s what we expected for customer service.

While we were gone camping for ten days, the RW Handyman team coordinated with our housesitter to fix our ceiling. Then they painted the walls in the living room, hallway, and office. When we got back, it was time to talk about flooring. You know you’ve spent too much time in flooring stores when your three-year-old starts to say things like “I like this trim” and “Can we get this tile?” Pretty funny. After lots of decisions, we landed on flooring that I love, and it is an upgrade from what we had before and was less than our budget because the company is discontinuing the color. That was good news. So we started to pull up the floor…

We did the house half at a time. Everything from one half moved into the other rooms, garage, and to the deck.

Ready for floor!

Unfortunately, at this point, we hit a snag. By now it was August 15 and we were anticipating our floor going in that week. Jim picked up the floor materials and then found out (why no one mentioned this earlier, I will never know) that you have to let the flooring sit in your house for 48 hours or more to acclamate to the humidity in your house before installation. Really. So we hosted Haley’s first birthday at our house with half the downstairs torn apart and only one working toilet, upstairs. Thank goodness we had nice weather!

The night after they installed the front room floor, Jim and I moved all the furniture out of the family room, kitchen, and dining room and pulled up that floor as well. We worked until 2 AM, but it was done!

While they installed the kitchen floor, they found a water leak behind the dishwasher. That had to be fixed, obviously. When we put the washing machine and dryer back, the washing machine stopped working. We had to order a part and do laundry elsewhere for almost two weeks. I’m not making this up.
With the flooring in, the team from RW Handyman started on trim. Once we had the trim installed, we realized how ridiculous our old oak doors looked with beautiful white trim. So we decided to have them paint the doors as well. And when you’ve got the doors off, you might as well replace that old gold hardware… so we did that too. Meanwhile, the powder room needed some paint touched up and I did a horrible job. I decided to repaint the entire bathroom, and redecorate a little while I was there. Jim installed a new faucet for me and it took way longer than it should have and included a trip to the hardware store for new water hoses.
Then we focused on the bathrooms upstairs. We decided to have the workers go ahead and replace the flooring in the kids’ bathroom too, and to upgrade from vinyl to tile. When Jim pulled the old floor and trim out, the trim all broke it was so brittle. Off he went to the store for new trim…

And while you have toilets and trim out of a bathroom, it would be silly not to paint it. So I painted the kids’ bathroom this “sweet mango” and it looks beautiful with the new tile! Nothing had been hung on the walls yet when I took this, but you get the idea.

After the floor was in, we reinstalled the toilets, fixed one last leak, and had many trips to the hardware store to fix the original leaky toilet. We think it might be all fixed now. 🙂

And finally, just last night, we finished the last of the small items in the downstairs. Here’s a look at the new floor, trim, doors, hardware, and paint (the “dapper tan,” the red was there already).

View from the front door walking in

It’s been over 11 weeks since we’ve had a fully functioning house… it’s nice to be back!

Roll Tide

We always look forward to fall for only one reason: college football. While Jim is a Husky, we also hold family ties to Alabama… we’re talking Civil War (and Jim married a Yankee girl!). We loved going to the game against Auburn two years ago and we’d love to go back for more.

We always wear our Bama gear on game day Friday and to watch them play. Sometimes people at the store think we’re in Cougar colors, which is downright embarassing. If the Cougars ever play Alabama, we’ll be buying front row seats to watch the carnage.

Ready to cheer on Alabama

I did it!

I did it! I finally skiied a full pass on a course in waterskiing. (What does that mean? See below.) After way too long of trying, I did it. I will make excuses about not having a boat for so long and having two maternity leaves, but really it comes down to finally being in great shape, consistently skiing, and working hard. Hooray! Here is a picture of me getting into the boat after my first full pass. Since then, I’ve done it more and have set a new personal best. Yay!

Waterskiing a course: Boat goes straight through the middle boat guides (red buoys). Skiier enters through first boat guides (called gates) and continues around each turn ball (yellow buoys). You have to go around all six and back out the gates for it to count as a full pass.

In case you’re wondering, it gets harder when you do two things: go faster and make the rope shorter. So far I’ve bumped up my speed a tiny bit and still made it. It’s harder than it looks. 🙂 Of course, Jim has been doing it for years but has been working on his speed and now he’s cutting the line length. So addictive!

Haley at 13 months

It’s about time I did an update on Haley. She is a very active little girl who can’t seem to get enough of anything. She is signing “sleep” now when she’s tired, which is usually right about nap time, and she crashes pretty hard. Then she wakes up cheerful and ready to go, go, go!

She has finally conquered self feeding with a spoon which has made our meal times soooooo much easier. She really has never enjoyed being fed and is very pleased to do it herself. Now she eats a little more and that makes everyone happy.

She has a new ability to build block towers. So far she’s up to four. And seriously, how cute is she?

I got out the tunnel the other day and she just went for it. She doesn’t have a lot of fear about trying new things – a good quality and a dangerous one.
She has also officially learned to blow out on command. This is super helpful when JT hands her his recorder. Awesome.
The big news is that she has conquered stairs, both up and down. What a relief for me. We don’t have gates and it is just so much less frantic now that she can go up and down on her own. Now we’re working on obedience. 🙂 She certainly understands directions. For instance, the other night I said, “Okay, let’s go upstairs for bath” and she dropped her toy and went crawling up the stairs. Good stuff.

Do the Puyallup

We had a fabulous time at the Puyallup Fair last week! We went on Monday and it was still super crowded… I can’t imagine what it must be like on the weekends. We went with our friends the Schmalz family so JT would have a buddy (and so we would have buddies, while we waited!). The weather was nice and the food was great. Hooray for the fair!

First stop: Fair scones

Second stop: tractors

Haley wanted to drive one too

Look how big it is!

At the petting zoo

Buddies. So sweet!

A little about the rides: we were so impressed that JT and Gracelyn wanted to ride the kid roller coaster all by themselves. The dads waiting in a pretty long line to get ride tickets. We buckled them in and sent them on their way…

And then JT hated it. It was actually pretty sad to watch, because the man running the ride kept encouraging the kids to put their arms in the air, so JT would because he thought that’s what he was supposed to do, but he was screaming and crying, “I’m scared!” I still don’t like to think about it. When he got off, Jim had a talk with him and it turns out the ride was faster than he thought and he thought the man would slow it down for him. 😦 We will try the roller coaster again next year.

JT was much happier on the other rides that weren’t quite so fast.

Then he and Gracelyn started holding hands around the fair. Is it me, or do they look like teenagers here? Such sweet friends.

Our last ride tickets were used up on the carousel (JT explains it as “the one with the horses that go up and down”).

Group picture before we left – what a fun day!

Two Wheeler

You might recall that we bought JT a two wheeler for his birthday and it was just a bit too tall. We took the pedals off so he can use it like a Strider bike (balance bike) for awhile and then learn to pedal without ever having to use training wheels. We keep suggesting he try it again, and today he decided he was ready. (I am suspicious his friends Gracelyn and Eli peer-pressured him into it… good stuff.) Sure enough, his feet reach now and he can balance without falling over. He is still very cautious. I took video but it is painful to watch, as he moves at a snail’s pace. But we are working on it!

Pretty proud… and very handsome!

Had to stop and “fix” something… such a boy.

Heritage Park

Our friend Eli had his birthday party at this great little park in Renton, so we invited our friends Carrie, Emi, and Kenzi to join us there on Friday. We had such a great time catching up! JT and Emi are just a month apart in age, and Kenzi and Haley are about six months apart.

Swinging

That’s right, Haley is six months older. Really.

Enjoying a picnic lunch…

Complete with a smooch from Emi! So sweet.

JT helped Emi up the rock by holding her hand. They’ve been friends for 2 1/2 years!

Haley wanted to climb the rock so badly.

When JT moved down to play with Haley in the bark chips, she started filling his hood with them. After all, what are little sisters for?

Matching Phil & Teds – waiting for big brother and sister to go to the bathroom. 🙂

Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad

Our friends the Krafts invited us to take a trip on the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad with them. After reading some negative reviews online, we were a little nervous – but it was wonderful! We think people just don’t know what to expect. It was perfect for our train-loving boy and curious little girl.

Getting ready to board

We did the trip out in the outside car!
It was loud and right next to the engine.

Our view of Mineral Lake from our picnic table for dinner

We picked a covered car on the way home

Haley enjoyed having a bench all to herself

Love this one!

A scenic view

Haley was sure there were very important things to see out the window

A beaver dam

Crossing the river

Mount Rainier

Over a bridge

Waving at cars as we pull into the station

A little tired 🙂

The group

The kids (and parents) got to climb in the engine car when the ride was finished – so cool!

This is one of the smallest churches in the United States. It shares a parking lot with the train depot.

We thought the scenery was lovely!

Awful

That is the word I would use to describe the morning that we took Haley for her blood work. Her pediatrician recommended we get a full diagnostic panel instead of just the standard anemia finger-poke because she is so, so small and not gaining weight. “Wouldn’t we all feel horribly if something was wrong and we didn’t catch it?” she said. We agreed. And then Haley was lying on the table and I thought, what was I thinking?

The two nurses who held her down were fabulous, but she screamed bloody murder (after this photo, when they started the draw) for a solid ten minutes. Then her little arm kept bleeding and they were nervous about why it wasn’t clotting and I got woozy and had to sit down. Meanwhile, JT is sitting calmly in his chair eating a granola bar. Typical.

It turns out, all of her results are just fine. She is barely low on iron so we’ll do a supplement or try to get more in her diet, but otherwise she is 100% normal. It’s nice to know for sure there is nothing wrong… but I’m so thankful both of my children are healthy so we don’t have to do that again. And I pray it stays that way!
