The Real Deal

After the big birthday party (read post below if you missed it!), my real birthday was pretty low-key. We had planned to go to the zoo and see a movie, but neither one worked out! Instead, we started the day by going to a local bakery for breakfast. I got a whole wheat apple cinnamon roll (healthy) with cream cheese frosting (not so) to go, and I ate it this morning. Correction: I ate a quarter of it this morning. I have never before in my life, not once, been so overwhelmed by frosting that I had to quit eating. I guess I’m getting too old for that. 🙂

Anyway, Jim took some pictures at breakfast. Here I am, thirty years old!

JT graciously shared his milk with me. He thought that was pretty funny!

We went to storytime at the library and came home. By then, we were ready for the donuts that we got to-go from the bakery. Jim decided to make it my “birthday cake” and got out the candles and everything. JT helped me blow them out.

We headed to Jim’s parents’ house for the afternoon and dinner. JT helped deliver the presents.

Jim’s parents hadn’t seen JT in over a month, so they were pretty happy to see him. He got presents from Uncle Rick and Aunt Julie (a big brother book!) and his Easter bucket.

Grandma let JT play in the kitchen while she was fixing dinner. He had a great time ladeling and spooning from the pot to the muffin pan, and all over the floor. Poor Slider had to exercise great self-control, as she sat outside the kitchen sniffing for bits and pieces that kept flinging in her direction.

Becky’s 30th Birthday Party

Wow. That sums it up. Jim threw me the best birthday party I’ve ever had (sorry, Mom and Dad!). He told me that we were getting dressed up and needed to be in Seattle at 6:30. Beyond that, I had no idea… that he was hosting a private dinner party at a luxury hotel for twenty of our friends.

We arrived at Hotel 1000 and the valet attendants asked if we were there for the party. I said yes, that I was the birthday girl. And he said, “Then this is for you!” and handed me a long-stemmed red rose. A great start to a beautiful evening!

Up to the fourth floor (passing an employee, who said, “Hello, Mr. Keene”), and we walked into the library, where everyone was waiting. They did not yell “surprise,” which I appreciated, but partly because they were busy enjoying appetizers and drinks. And some people were watching basketball. 🙂 Right away, a server swooped in to take my jacket and deliver me a drink. I was in awe!

After lots of hugs and mingling, it was time for dinner. A server came in and quietly asked groups to move to the terrace, where tables were set with linens, china, and stemware. We enjoyed a lovely salad, a champagne intermezzo, and a choice of grilled halibut or New York steak. Everyone commented that the food was amazing. I had the steak, and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. The server set my plate first for every course, something you notice if you’ve spent four years at sorority etiquette dinners.

While coffee was being poured, Jim did something that scares him more than his day job… he gave a speech. (He got a 4.0 in speech at UW, but whatever.) He basically bragged about and loved on me for five minutes. It was adorable and made me feel extremely special.

while I listen with a smile.

Then the serving team brought out our dessert… Costco cake – my favorite. Jim had told the server beforehand to bring my favorite piece: a double-portion of the corner with extra frosting. Everyone at my table laughed when she set my plate in front of me!

People hung out and talked and laughed until almost eleven. That’s pretty late for a bunch of thirty-year-olds with babysitters at home!

Right before we left, Emrie pulled me off to the side. She had delivered a gift (even though the invitation stated no gifts) from her and three other friends. Inside the gift bag was – be still my heart! – a Tiffany’s box. And inside the box was a beautiful pair of knot earrings. They are very much my style, will last a lifetime, and look lovely with everything. I’m wearing them now!

I felt like Cinderella and didn’t want the night to end. While waiting for our car from valet, the attendant noticed that my rose had wilted a little. He smiled and said, “Let me fix that for you,” and brought me a fresh one. Then we hopped in our car, which was freshly stocked with chilled bottled water, and went home.

I so appreciate all who came and made my special night perfect. A thank you to Zack for bringing his camera and snapping the pictures. Another thank you to my friends Sarah and Adam, who apparently helped with lots of details, including invitations, music, and cake delivery. And most of all, the husband of the century award goes to Jim, who did so much work to make my thirtieth birthday elegant, amazing, and incredibly memorable!

Birthday Brunch

Jim threw an amazing birthday party for me Friday night. But I don’t have the pictures yet from the photographer, so I’m waiting to post about it until then. You’ll just have to wait!

Saturday, we went to pick up JT from my parents’ house. My grandma was there too, and we had a wonderful birthday brunch. (My mom outdid herself… cheese blintzes with strawberries and homemade whipped cream, scones and jam, sausages, bacon, cheesy eggs, deviled eggs… we ate until we could barely move!)

Playing on the couch with Dad

We needed to walk off some of our brunch, so we went to the playground by the lake that’s just a couple of blocks from my parents’ house.

Then it was back to the house to open presents and say goodbye. Here JT is watching Grandpa take Great-Grandma to the car so she can go home. Ever since my dad drove the truck to our house the other week, JT has been enamoured by the fact that Grandpa has a truck. He goes around the house saying, “Baba, truck!” He was hoping to see the truck here, but no, Grandpa drove the car.

I (Heart) a Stoller

I found it. Seriously. It’s got to be the best stroller ever. It’s the new City Select from Baby Jogger, and I think it fits ALL of my stroller wish list. Okay, you can’t jog with it. You can “walk briskly on paved pathways.” But who wants to jog pushing 85 pounds of stroller and kids? So really, it’s perfect.

What is so great about this stroller, you may ask? Oh, let me count the ways…

  • The easiest fold on the market – the patented Baby Jogger fold
  • Hand operated brake
  • Locking or swiveling front wheels
  • Giant basket
  • Telescoping handlebar
  • Enormous sun shade
  • One piece one hand four position reclining seat
  • Adjustable height foot rest and sun shade
  • Never flat tires
  • Removable child snack trays
  • Each seat holds 45 pounds… but the stroller is only 26

The list goes on. But wait, there’s more. There are about 20 different configurations you can do with this stroller, because (click, click), it becomes a tandem double. Just like that. Two car seats, two toddler seats, one of each… then face them whichever way you like. No kidding! If you want more, there’s a great review on YouTube by Baby Gizmo. It’s nine minutes long. I’ve watched it three times.

So it’s perfect for one baby and one toddler, which is what I’ll have in, oh, six months. And considering we use our stroller about 3-4 times a week currently, I’m thinking I’m going to need a double.

And it arrived in some stores this week, which is very exciting because it is so new that it is hard to find. I got a call on Tuesday from Chris at Merry Go Round, letting me know that they had one floor model and three in stock. (Because of course, I got on a calling list.)

On Wednesday, we went and visited the stroller. There were two other families there at the same time we were. One woman said to me, “Have you been stalking this stroller online too?” 🙂 We had JT with us, and another family had a baby, so we put them both in the stroller and tested it out. It was so funny to have all of us standing around oooohing and ahhhing over this stroller!

Everyone tried folding it (yep, shockingly easy). It even folds with both toddler seats on! And it is so smooth to manuever around. I love, love, love that it can be a single or a double so quickly and easily. When we left, the employee said, “Well, was it everything you thought it would be?” And I laughed and said, “Yes!” And it really was. I guess I have to start saving my pennies…

The End of Gymnastics

Monday was our last gymnastics class for the season, because we are starting swim lessons again next week to get ready for summer. We said goodbye to Miss Amy and told her we’d be back in the fall (with another child in a carrier or something…).

On Tuesday, we invited Jen, Asher, and Abby to come play at the gymnastics center for indoor playground. It was so much fun exploring all of the equipment, plus the giant inflatable slide, without a time limit. I would highly recommend spending the $4 to let your kids get their energy out on a rainy day!

I took some pictures of the boys, of course.

Swinging on the rings

Getting ready to climb up the big slide… JT needed help at first but was inspired by Asher, who is four months older, and ended up doing a lot of the climbing himself!

The boys had trampoline races too:

JT seems to be thinking, “Yes, Asher tripped, I’m going to win!”

Playing King of the Mat

Jen, Asher, and Abby came back to our house for lunch before heading home for nap time. What a great way to spend our Tuesday morning!

Still worth eating

Alas, the trials of removing the practically spill proof tray! Tonight at dinner, JT accidentally knocked over his bowl of Mexican Pork and Rice Soup (yum). It was an amount too great even for the Bumkins bib to catch. When I went to get some paper towels, I noticed that he continued eating… out of his lap. Apparently the soup was still worth eating, no matter where it was. 🙂

Fun with Friends

JT got to spend the afternoon with Asher a couple of weeks ago when Jim had to go to work on one of my work days. They took a wagon ride to see some animals, and both boys brought their stuffed monkeys with them. 🙂

Last week, we met Asher, Jen, and Abby at the park on a not-so-drizzly morning for some play time and a long walk. Asher and JT enjoyed riding the motorcycles and watching the ducks.

Then this week, our friends Carrie and Emi (from swim lessons, remember?) came to visit. When went to story time at the library, to the park to play, and finally back to our house for lunch. What a great morning!

Latest Loves (and a little brag too)

Jim and I had a date to Maggiano’s last weekend for his annual work banquet. Brag alert: Jim was nominated for an award. We had a great time getting dressed up and enjoying a free dinner (nominees and their dates get free tickets to the event).

But I doubt you’re here to read about us… on to JT. He is absolutely addicted to putting shoes on. If there are shoes in his vicinity, watch out, they’re going on his feet – no matter the size.

He is also very interested in riding his Harley around the house, especially now that he can steer and cruise around without a lot of effort. His feet can’t reach the pedals yet, but they’re close. Today Jim took JT to the park and JT got to ride his Harley all the way there. Fun!

JT is also getting really attached to three things: George, blanket, binky. Right around 7:30 (and after nap), he runs and gets those three things… just to have them close by. So the other night we had snuggle time in our bedroom, and I got down my body pillow. He ran and got his comfort devices, and we had a snack and milk on the floor.

Guess who didn’t want to be left out of snuggle time? 🙂

Fun at the Table

JT really is a good eater. He has his ups and downs (mainly based on teething), but he eats a good variety of food and follows our “one more bite” rule like a champ. Here he is demonstrating how Jim taught him to eat peas. This method helps you forget that you’re eating green vegetables, and gets you to the main course a little faster.

Speaking of the main course, JT has been interested in dipping lately. We had French dip the other night, and he was dipping his sandwich in au jus like an expert. Then we had chicken-spinach-mushroom quesadillas, and I showed him how to dip in his sour cream. Not only did he enjoy an entire small quesadilla, he scooped up all remaining sour cream with bits of tortilla.

There have been a lot of changes at the table for JT lately. First, he got to use a cup instead of a sippy cup. Then, today, we took the tray off his high chair and scooted it up to the table, just like one of us. The benefit here is that he’s still in a chair his size, and it has straps. 🙂 He was very happy to eat dinner that way.

After dinner, he wanted to sit in his chair at the table some more. So we broke out his puzzles. I hadn’t watched him do a puzzle in awhile… he’s getting better. Our friend Emrie gave us some puzzles that her kids were finished with: I think it’s time to break out the harder ones!

p.s. He says “trucks” at the end because he wanted to do his truck puzzle, and I said no, do this one first. 🙂

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday, Slider! Slider turned five years old today. Middle age is treating her pretty well. She got a new Nylabone for her birthday (okay, not really… we buy them every couple of months anyway). We don’t make a big deal out of her birthday, but it is kind of a milestone this year.

I took a couple of pictures of her to mark this special occasion. In a few years she’ll start getting gray in her fur, so we have to capture her in her prime now!

I am also posting a couple from when she was a puppy. Wasn’t she cute? 🙂

From tim to time, people ask us how many words Slider knows. I usually answer, “Oh, about fifty.” But I’d never really counted. So this morning, while JT was finishing breakfast, I started a list. I only wrote down words or phrases that she responds to. I’m sure there are more that she knows, she just doesn’t need to do anything. (Slider has a pretty good filter about zoning out when you’re not talking to her… except on the word “walk.” She perks up anytime you say that word!) So here is the list:

On a side note, JT is twenty months old today. And in exactly six months (if he cooperates), we will have another baby!
